Huron-Wendat Culture and History

Take a walk through historic Old Wendake, home of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette Church and its treasures. Construction of the original church began in 1730. It was designated a National Historic Site by Heritage Canada in 1981.

No visit to Wendake would be complete without a stop at the Onhoüa Chetek8e Traditional Huron Site. This authentic reconstruction of a Huron village is a window onto the history, traditions, and way of life of the Huron-Wendat Nation.

Reach out and discover the story of the chiefs who have lived in Tsawenhohi House. Located in Old Wendake, this house was built between 1807 and 1820 for Grand Chief Nicolas Tsawenhohi Vincent. It is classified as a heritage site by the Council of the Huron-Wendat Nation.

The house now features guided tours, craft demonstrations, an exhibition of cultural objects, a display of archaeological artifacts from the site, a multimedia presentation, and more.

The Mural of the Wendat People pays tribute to Wendake's cultural heritage and attractions. It depicts the people's journey from ancestral times to the present day using the Huron and other First Nations myths and legends. This masterly work should not be missed.

Wendake is also home to a thriving community of artists and artisans. Aboriginal galleries and arts and crafts shops feature a broad range of traditional and contemporary creations.

Kabir Kouba Falls

Magnificent Kabir Kouba Falls plunges through a canyon right next to the town. A visit to the Interpretation Centre of Parc de la Falaise et de la chute Kabir Kouba provides an opportunity to learn more about the geological and human history of this celebrated wonder of nature.

The adventurous will not want to miss the restaurant La Traite for a delicious taste of Huron-Wendat dishes.
